Sociology Department and ASEN Edinburgh are organising a Master class for PG students and staff:
Globalisation of Nationalism
Speakers:
Liah Greenfeld is Professor of Sociology, Political Science and Anthropology at Boston University, US. Called “one of the most original thinkers of the current period” and “the great historian of Nationalism”, she is the author, among numerous other publications, of the trilogy on nationalism and modern culture, including Nationalism: Five Roads to Modernity; The Spirit of Capitalism: Nationalism and Economic Growth; and Mind, Modernity, Madness: The Impact of Culture on Human Experience (Harvard University Press, 1992, 2001, 2013).
The master class will focus on her more recent work on globalisation of nationalism.
This will be an informal and friendly event and a wonderful opportunity for those doing research in the field of nationalism, culture and globalisation.
Participants are expected to read two book chapters by Prof Greenfeld to prepare for the master class:
Greenfeld, L. Ed. (2016) Globalisation of nationalism: the motive-force behind twenty-first century politics (ECPR Press). Introduction.
Greenfeld, L. (2019) Nationalism: A Short History (Brookings Institution Press). Chapter 5: Globalization of Nationalism and the Rise of Asia.
Places are limited! Please do commit to attending the master class should you sign up.
